奈良の長谷寺を訪れた際、畳敷きの大広間で感じた感覚を起点として本作品は生まれた。なぜ私はこの空間に身を置くことで心地よさを覚えるのか。眼前に広がる景色の美しさによるものだと捉えていたが、実際には足もとから伝わる畳の触感が、その心地よさの本質であることに気づいた。
本作は、視覚的な情報として認識されている「空間の快」を、視覚では捉えきれない触覚的な感覚から捉え直す試みである。人はしばしば、快・不快の判断を視覚に帰属させるが、身体感覚としての触覚は無意識のうちに空間認識を支配している。その見過ごされがちな感覚の層に光を当て、触覚によって生じる心地よさを視覚表現へと転換することで、知覚のずれや認識の誤差を可視化する。
