Concept
日常生活の中に潜む版表現を見出し、それを作品へと変容させる試みを行った。版画といってしまうと、美術館や専門的な制作環境の中で語られることが多く、その工程や技術は高度で複雑なものとして認識されやすい。しかし、作品の本質は特別な技法の中だけに存在するのではなく、日常の中にも広く潜在しているのではないかと考えた。本作では、その視点から「たい焼き」という極めて身近な食べ物に着目した。たい焼きは、金属の型によって生地を挟み込み、同じ形態を繰り返し生み出していく。その構造は、「版によって像を写し取り、反復的に複製する」という版画の仕組みと非常に近いものがある。
私はこの行為に、版表現の本質的な構造を見出した。美術作品としての版画を説明するのではなく、誰もが知るたい焼きを起点にすることで、専門知識を持たない鑑賞者であっても、作品鑑賞へと自然に接続できるのではないかと考えたのである。
本作品は、たい焼きというモチーフを和紙によって表現した。和紙は日本の版表現とも深い関わりを持つ素材であり、その柔らかな質感や繊維の表情を通して、量産される「たい焼き」のイメージに独特の存在感を与えている。また、本作で使用した黒の顔料には、実際にたい焼きを焼き、炭化させたものを素材として生成した顔料を使用している。単に見た目としてのたい焼きらしさを再現するのではなく、実際のたい焼きそのものを素材として作品へ取り込むことで、作品と現実との間に連続性や痕跡を残すことを試みた。身近なモチーフを起点とすることで、美術や版画に対して距離を感じている人々に対しても、親しみや興味を持ってもらえる可能性があると考えている。
本作は、たい焼きという誰もが知る存在を通して、版表現を専門的な技法としてではなく、生活の延長線上に存在する表現として捉え直そうとする試みである。
This work explores the possibility of discovering printmaking within everyday life and transforming those discoveries into an artwork. Printmaking is often discussed within the context of museums or specialized studios, where its processes and techniques are perceived as highly technical and complex. However, I believe that the essence of printmaking is not confined to specialized methods alone, but also exists throughout our daily lives.
From this perspective, I focused on taiyaki, a familiar fish-shaped pastry commonly found in Japan. Taiyaki is made by pouring batter into a metal mold and repeatedly producing identical forms. This process closely parallels the fundamental principle of printmaking: creating an image through a matrix and reproducing it multiple times.
I found the essential structure of printmaking within this ordinary act. Rather than explaining printmaking as a specialized artistic discipline, I chose taiyaki as a point of departure because it is an object familiar to almost everyone. In doing so, I hoped that even viewers without prior knowledge of art or printmaking could naturally engage with the work.
The taiyaki motif in this work is constructed from washi (Japanese paper). Washi has a deep historical relationship with Japanese printmaking, and its soft texture and visible fibers lend a distinctive physical presence to the image of this mass-produced food. Furthermore, the black pigment used in the work was created from actual taiyaki that were burned and carbonized. Rather than merely reproducing the appearance of taiyaki, I incorporated the material itself into the work, leaving traces of the original object and creating a continuity between the artwork and everyday reality.
By taking a familiar motif as its starting point, this work seeks to encourage viewers—including those who may feel distant from art or printmaking—to approach the subject with curiosity and familiarity. Through the universally recognizable image of taiyaki, the work reconsiders printmaking not as a specialized artistic technique, but as a form of expression that exists as an extension of everyday life.
